"REAL MEN DO REAL THINGS" is
a 10-session intensive workshop for High School young men at the "crossroads". This training confronts young
men with the question "What are real men, and what do we expect of them?" During this training, students will
analyze and evaluate personal behavior, strengths, weaknesses and decision making as they confront Manhood.
"REAL MEN DO REAL THINGS" is designed to allow students to develop and begin to incorporate behaviors consistent with respectful, responsible and socially conscious living. The training challenges students in both the cognitive and affective domains. Moreover it incorporates and develops reading, writing and speaking skills. "REAL MEN DO REAL THINGS" serves as both prevention and intervention to negative student behaviors. It is the first step in the process of young men seeing themselves as socially and morally conscious leaders. Consequently, as you determine which students will participate, it is imperative that you allow your group to be heterogeneous (if possible) in terms of social behavior. This will allow students to grow and be positively influenced by their peers as they digest the content of each workshop. The "REAL MEN DO REAL THINGS" Workshop Series:
Too often in discussions surrounding Gifted and Talented students, time is spent pondering WHAT these students are capable of at the expense of ignoring WHO these students are. In the effort to provide cognitive enriched curriculum, many institutions ignore the affective elements of student development. Understanding this dynamic along with the desire to address the social and emotional needs of gifted children, Bridge Builders Network has created REFLECTIONS©-Value Clarification Via Poetry Reflection “Giftedness” can be described as the capacity to acquire increased information with a greater depth of understanding. REFLECTIONS© challenges students to consider the depth of their character, the depth of their relationships with others and the depth of their social and civic responsibility. In a unique style and format, this program requires students to read, reflect upon, design, create, produce and apply poetry as a tool to clarify values and develop a greater personal awareness and self confidence. REFLECTIONS© is a curriculum designed for but not limited to use within Gifted and Talented programs. In both design and delivery, this program is consistent with the findings of Howard Gardner (Multiple Intelligences), Carol Ann Tomlinson (Differentiated Instruction), SEARCH Institute ( 40 Developmental Assets) and Dr. Thomas Lickona (The Stages of Moral Reasoning). With its primary resource “This Side of The Rainbow-Reflective Poetry Journal”, REFLECTIONS© is a life-changing program that will impact students and teachers for years to come.
